Here is a fun activity to surprise your kids with. While they’re outside or playing in another room, set up about 15 books somewhere for them to find. When I did this, I didn’t say anything about it. They wandered in from playing outside and Josie said “what is this?” They each started making a pile of books. They spent the next 20 minutes looking through the books and reading some of them.
Positives:
-good reading practice
-they read books that sometimes get overlooked
-quick and easy to set up
-I can repeat this over and over with different books and different locations around the house
If anyone tries this activity, I’d love to hear how it goes. I got lucky and it worked great this time. I can imagine that some days it would go over better than others, depending on the kind of day the kids are having and the timing. Success this time, though! Yay!

We have lots of ‘overlooked’ books. This would be a great way to bring attention to them again!

Us too, Amy!

Great idea! Kids do tend to overlook toys and books sometimes in favor of their “favorites.” I remember how much my kids loved books when they were little and we went to the library a lot. Of course, we bought some too!
Thanks for linking up to the “Making Your Home Sing Monday” linky party!

Love it! I’ve done this for about ten years with my kids, on and off. I try it every now and again to see how things will go. I place books on steps, on the kitchen table, in the yard, in the car, etc. It always goes well so keep it up!! 😉

That’s awesome and good to know, Shara!

What a great idea,I think I will give it a try in the morning with our fresh supply of new library books. I also display books upright on shelves, dressers, tables like they do in the library, and it never fails, they go after those ones.

Cool, Joanna!
I’ve never thought to display the books upright on shelves, etc. I need to do that!
