Have you heard the saying “you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit”? I first heard it when my son was in preschool. Very useful phrase!
In this book, Melvin the squirrel learns the rule at school and then eventually tells his family the rule at home. I would highly recommend this book for preschoolers through 1st grade. They seem to understand the concept quickly when it’s introduced. And you can use it if kids start to complain about wanting a different color of something, etc.
Overall, this is an adorable story with a simple message. It would be especially helpful for preschool and primary kids who might have a tendency to complain and throw a tantrum if something isn’t exactly the way they wanted.
For some kids, this book may also be a springboard for a discussion about different things you can do if you aren’t happy with something. Kids could discuss trading or taking turns instead of throwing a fit.
Have you had the chance to read this one yet?

I haven’t read this one yet, but I will definitely check it out. I use the phrase, “You get what you get, and you don’t get upset” in my classroom and at home. It’s a great lesson for kids to understand, and also to learn gratitude.

That is just too funny. Many years ago when my daughter was in Kindergarten the teacher used to say, You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit.”
